BLACK smoke coming from neighbor building
Hey guys, I’ve recently noticed that the chimney of my neighboring building emits BLACK smoke like every hour or so, and depending on the wind direction, the smoke would fly toward the windows of all the surrounding buildings cuz the neighboring building is much lower than all others. the exact address of that building is **402 Ocean Avenue**. I’ve already reported it to 311, but seriously, what else can I do about it to adjust this issue?? Apparently no one from that building’s gonna pay for my medical bill if I ever get lung cancer from it. Please help me!

Thanks Gennady, that’s very useful info! I’m wondering, does the black smoke happen BECAUSE they’re burning on #4 or #6? If burning #2, the smoke won’t happen? I’ve already reported to 311 and DEP, i’m not sure if they actually care though. Do you know how much the building would get fined? Does having more people make complaints help the situation at all? thanks again!

There are many reasons, but they all come either to poor oil and air mixture, poor oil atomization and/or on 4 and 6 oil it also oil heater malfunction. Those boilers have smoke alarm which must shut boiler off when it smokes, but in this case it is probably turned off and bypassed. Eventually they will have their boiler carbonized and go out of order.
