Stone Wall in Cellar

Our cellar has stone walls. Previous owner had applied dry lock over top of it, dirt and all. As you would expect, the dry lock is coming off. I am wondering what a more permanent solution might be. I am not seeking a finished look at this stage, just something more sealed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I had the stonework repointed on the inside for the reasons aberdeen mentioned and poured a slab in the backyard pitched away from the house to make sure water runoff was far from the back wall. It seems to be holding up 2 years later. The front yard was already paved and pitched so seepage wasn’t a problem there. no amount of pointing or work on the interior will prevent water. that has to be dealt with from the outside.

i have the same problem on my semi-detached brownstone basement. What would you suggest? and the estimated cost? I’ve seen them dig in the ground and apply a membrane or something on HGTV. is that possible?

I usually recommend applying stucco or some similar compound to the walls. It is impossible to waterproof from the inside, but this process closes off all of the pathways for rodents and insects to enter. Also, fix/clean up the floor and paint with a good concrete paint so that you can walk around down there in a clean pair of socks without getting grossed out. Pay attention to drainage at the exterior, as poor rainwater management is the most common cause of basement water entry.
