Replace rear hatch with skylight?

I’m ready to remove the metal hatch from my rear cellar entrance and replace it with a skylight. Anyone have any experience/suggestions on how/with whom to proceed? I’m assuming this would involve removal of the door, having the concrete “rim” redone, & having a pitched metal frame fabricated that would accept a commercially available skylight.

Hi Hopper, I just received my velux skylight and I’m having the window guy come look at it to give me an install estimate. He didn’t seem concerned with installing an anderson skylight he was going to order. I got a remote control venting one so I can let some air in. Wondering how yours is going.

know someone who had hatches made out of glass block, maybe this is good idea, something that can hold weight but also lets in the light. Won’t be as bright as a true skylight of course.

one thing to keep in mind, is that in winters sheets of ice can fall from your roof and i’ve had furniture shattered before, so it is something to consider.  but certainly people have done it.  Also, you could just remove and go without a hatch altogether, place a secure glass door at the bottom of the entrance to the basement (if you have a drain down there). as for the safety element, you could use laminated glass.  this one is pretty cool to me,  you’re making me want one too!  http://www.martelfab.com/projects/architectural_metalwork/65-cellar-hatch

I would very much advise against this project. It is a significant security risk as your pretty new skylight is going to be much easier for a criminal to get past than the metal hatch. It is all a safety hazard. If someone trips and falls on this the plate glass from the skylight will shred the them and the tumble into the basement seems unpleasant as well.
