I live at the top of the Slope, so not worried, but what should our friends and neighbours in the flood zone [especially with Brownstones and lower levels] do to get ready?

I generally have the same reflex as Dave in Bedstuy on this, but he may not be correct: http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/comment.html?entrynum=1899 Howver, all your friends can really do is to assume the power may go out and prepare accordingly, and have a gameplan in case they need to go.  Still WAY too early to get too worked up about.

That tornado that came through Brookyn last fall had a wind speed of about 80 mph according to reports.  My patio furniture all blew about 15 feet to the other side of my roof.  The roof cat had the good sense to go under the deck instead of into his little house, but it freaked him out.  It’s my understanding that a tornado has more lift than a hurricane, but I’m planning on taking in all the patio furniture on the barge and putting down the bimini roof on the boat.  I’ll take my chances with the patio stuf in ps because there’s a parapet wall and high rail.  Maybe the cat can move in to the bathroom, but that might scare him even more than being in a storm.

If you’re worried about basement flooding, go buy a submersible pump and long hose.  During a huge rainstorm years ago, the basement (part of our aparment) flooded and the plumber that came left one of those pumps with us until the storm ended (he slowed the leak) and it just pumped the water to where we had the hose (out to the street).  It seemed like a wise purchase–he said they have them for $50-100 at Lowes and Home Depot.  This doesn’t prevent it but can minimize it–the pump would kick on when the water touched a sensor about an inch off the ground.

This might sound like a silly question but whats the best way to prevent basement flooding?  We’re closing on a house on teens street between 3/4 ave, so I want to be prepared for future hurricanes, lots of rain, etc.

I seriously doubt there will be flooding.  At this point is sounds like wind damage may still be the biggest concern.
