floor sucker sump pump/water in the basement
I have a capped pipe in the floor of my basement (toward the back wall of the house). When it rains a lot I get significant puddle. I have reworked the gutter to spill into the garden and had the pipe uncapped and snaked and I still get water when it rains a lot. Any thoughts on what I should do next to fix the problem? In the meantime, is there a type of small sump pump tha doesnt need to be submerged? Thanks!

I must admit i’m a little confused as to why a capped pipe would leak. If there is no rainwater running down into the main drain while its raining, then the street sewer must be either backing up into your house or just full and impeding your own waste water from flowing out. Have you seen where the puddle comes from as it happens? Do you have a drain / drain pan just outside the rear door of the basement? These are there just for that purpose, so your toilet in the basement doesn’t back up and that fills up instead (frequently flowing over). The puddle that forms by the cap may just collect there because there is a dip in the floor and is where the water pools after it has spilled in – this is exactly what happens in our place. Because the floor is pitched towards the front (just like the drain – – and therefore if it floods everything can drain all the way into the front trap pit, and back out to the street) and all that is left is small puddles of evidence. Of course, if your trap cap isn’t sealed then it would leak, which is why it would be great on a very heavy rain day to observe exactly how the water gets where it does.
