cellar hatch - where to buy, what to look for?

Where’s a good place to buy a decent, inexpensive cellar hatch? Nothing fancy but we want something that is very secure, will keep water out, and hold up over time. We don’t care so much about the aesthetic. We really won’t be using it to get into or out of the cellar, so it doesn’t need to be easy to open/close. Also, what features should I be looking for? I’ve never bought one before so I’m clueless. Thanks!

See this is why I ask questions – I didn’t even think of the fire department. Is there anything I can do legally to make it more secure than just a keeping a padlock on it? It seems crazy that someone can simply cut it in order to break into the house. And what are some solutions to making it more secure that perhaps aren’t fire safety compliant? Anyone know if these types of break-ins – through the cellar hatch – are a popular method for breaking in?

As said above if you are in a Landmark district just copy what you already have. Otherwise bare in mind that the fire Department is supposed to be able to get down there in an emergency: IE the only lock can be a padlock on the outside, that they will/can cut off. If some of your neighbors appear to have a tin cover wooden framed “roof” over their shoot, it is probably covering a metal grate locked with a padlock & chain from underneath; the fire department can cut the chain &/or the padlock. A solid iron painted black hinged lid/door etc. normally will have a lock on the outside.

Look at your neighbors’ hatch covers. Are they tin over wooden frames, or are they Bilco doors? For tin, try Superior Tinsmith on 6th St. in Park Slope. Many outlets where you can buy Bilco doors. If you’re in a historic district, you’ll need to match existing cover.
