basement remodel first steps?

How does one determine the soundness of a basement  (in terms of water, mold, and insects/rodents)? We would like to remodel the basement of our newly purchased house, but as a first step want to get a sense of how livable it is, how it is constructed. It has been used as living space by the previous owners for the past 10 years. They said there were no floods. Our inspector also did not see any signs of damage. But before we invest in the remodel we would like to make any necessary improvements to keep water, mold, and critters away. Can anyone recommend a professional with this type of expertise? Or, is there a process or inspection that can tell us what we need to know, other than what the regular home inspector said?

You could inspect the walls for any gaps and fill them, monitor the humidity and maybe get a dehumidifier to keep mold and critters at bay. Basements are naturally damp and damp invites critters and mold. If you haven’t seen any seepage or leaks in spite of the heavy rains in the past few weeks you’re probably okay. It’s still a basement, though, and there’s a reason why New York City doesn’t consider it living space. You should probably also install a sump pump just to be safe in case of seepage or burst pipes
