Simple but custom molding profile
http://cdn.brownstoner.com/4f4ace4612b8d-.jpg
Anyone have suggestions on how to make the attached molding profile with a router – I’m assuming it would take two different bits . . . Is it possible? Or, do I have to get a custom knife made. (sorry, I’m using a paintbrush application for my computer). We have some door casings that need to be replaced.

You can buy this beading router blade at Rockler Woodworking online: http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=5305&filter=beading%20router

I think your drawing is off. You can do it with one bit, two passes.

multiple passes with two or three bits and I am not sure how close you would get if you are trying to match something as stock bits do not always conform to historic profiles. the very right side can be made with a beading bit. I would probably make a pass with a small roundover for the top. now, the inside might be tricky. it would be hard to produce a return on the inside as a bit can’t turn in there and not damage the material on the opposing side, but there are bits that can cut that shape – a cove bit for instance though since they may not have a cutter on the bottom, a pass on the table saw may be neccessary to cut along the bead. Now, if someone came to me for something like this for a job, I would probably recommend sending out to a place such as Adriatic Wood Products in East New York. To try to make it would be iffy, particularly if it were to match something else. Steve

I’m neither skilled with a router or even really a hammer but couldn’t you make it as two parts? If you buy a round the other piece becomes pretty simpe I think. There’s always dykes.. Best of luck.
