We used Marty Anderson for ours are were pretty happy with the final result, that being said, he did most everything from redoing the stairs ot reinstalling and fixing and making a newel, so this may be more than you were looking for: http://web.mac.com/marty.anderson/Site/Welcome.html

Any recommendations for an affordable place in Bklyn or Queens to get a new wooden banister, railing and newel post. Also, how does it work…do I go pick it out first then do they come to my house and measure? or the opposite. Thanks!!!!!!

Maybe best to find some photos on line of the style you want and then call a contractor and ask him/her to do the leg work.  I would skip HD and Lowes as they carry standard, run of the mill product.  There is a picture of one we did on our website which is product from Dykes.  Dykes will have the best handrail selection in the area.
