fireplace frame needs repair...do I need framer?

Sounds like you have sagging joists?  An all around carpenter should be able to help.

A “Brownstoner” client recently mentioned that queries on the new site are not getting as many answers as on the old.  Since the community at large isn’t pitching in to give you recs, feel free to contact me if you need help.

I recently purchased a small row house in South Slope.  The hearth of the fireplace has cracked.  It is located on the ground floor.  A metal post was installed underneath for extra support.  After breaking through the drywall to see what was going on, the inspector told us to get this reframed.  Can any carpenter handle this or does it have to be a framer?  Any recommendations?
