Bannister Re-Finishing/Restoration

Hi, Our interior bannister is in need of major repair: super wobbly, 15 missing spindles, last painted in the early 60’s.  It goes up 3 flights and runs approximately 70 feet.  I’m looking to stregthen it, strip and varnish the handrail, replace the missing or broken spindles, and re-paint all the spindles.   I’ve gotten two bids – one high, one low (a $2500 difference between the two).  I’m wondering how much this should cost and if anyone can recommend someone for this work.  I’d like to get a third bid and also know what the norm should be. we do work like this and I have to say, it would be tough for us to do something like this – and guarantee the durability of it – for 3k.  A handyman working alone may have the skill but working alone will take longer.  The contractor may have staff who have done this over and over again and may get it done faster and that contractor may really know where there could be some issues that may need special attention.  It is hard to say as if that handyman has done this before, he may be just as competent as the contractor albeit slower.   Steve

Thanks, I will call for a 3rd estimate.  But does anyone have a ball park of what this should be.  One estimate is $3000 and the other is $5500\.  That’s a pretty big difference.  On the other hand, the low bid is from a handyman and the other is from someone who specializes in this work.
