With or Without an Expeditor?

Is it impossible to file at the Brooklyn Department of Buildings without an expeditor? If so what is the time frame to file and get permits. It is for an ALT 1 filing and we have the drawings.   Thanks!

I had one client do it in Manhattan, but it really is not worth your time and it will add to the process as nothing in Brooklyn goes smoothly. Alt I’s are much more intense than an Alt II.

Unfortunately, building department filing procedures and protocols are not self-evident.  Filling out forms correctly is just the tip of the iceberg.  The process is both arduous and complex, and there is a culture of distrust at the department of buildings, thanks to the rather constant efforts of developers and architects to get around the rules (see Scarano, Robert.)

It is possible, in that it is certainly allowed, but it is extremely confusing and can be very time consuming.  There are many forms to be completed and the DOB keeps changing the process.  I’m an architect and I’ve done some expediting of my own jobs, but still heavily rely on my expediter to guide me through the process.  The process is so frustrating that I think a good expediter is well worth the fee.   If you have the drawings, then I assume you have an architect or engineer who has prepared them.  This professional will be the one signing and sealing the forms.  S/he should be able to help guide you through the process.
