Unidentified wires hanging in airshaft
In a prewar brownstone coop building where I viewed a unit, there was a bunch of wires tied together hanging out in the air shaft shared with the adjoining building. The wires seem to coming from the roof and was visibly noticeable when looking out the window in the kitchen. There was also a mesh netting between the two adjoining brownstone buildings in sectioning off the air shaft. Can anyone give me some idea of what the wires might be, and purpose of the mesh netting (guessing it might to keep pigeons from flying in on the netting?)? The wires are rather unsightly looking out and I wonder if it might be a health hazard with electro-magnetic currents? Any constructive feedback would be appreciated.

Some landlord out there will be getting quite the tenant. It may even be older wire for a roof antenna from the pre-cable stone ages.

electro magnetic currents? I hear tinfoil hats are very protective headgear. You’re in the wrong city if you’re worried about leaking electronic pollution. Its most likely coax cable for the various internet, cable/sattelite subscriptions in the building. Might even be older phone wire. They *should* be in a conduit – but rarely are. You can bring it up with the landlord and see if they want to do anything about it. The netting is a bird net/debris net, most likely. No health concerns – and minor visual concerns (minor because they are outside your home – not in it.) See if you can talk someone into having them bundled and sheathed, or have a conduit run. If they say no – you can likely fight an uphill battle trying to enforce code.. or simply let it go.
