Smoke Detector Requirements

Can anyone advise on whether the NYC building code requires installing smoke/CO detectors on every floor when renovating a three story, two family house? Or are they only required on floors that have bedrooms? Thanks in advance.

A 2-family house is classified as R-3\. According to the current code they are required on each floor. —————- 907.2.10.1.1 Smoke alarms in Groups R-2, R-3, and I-1\. Single- or multiple-station smoke alarms shall be installed and maintained in Groups R-2, R-3, and I-1, regardless of occupant load at all of the following locations within a dwelling unit: 1\. On the ceiling or wall outside of each room used for sleeping purposes within 15 feet (4572 mm) from the door to such room. 2\. In each room used for sleeping purposes. 3\. In each story within a dwelling unit, including below-grade stories and penthouses of any area, but not including crawl spaces and uninhabitable attics. In dwellings or dwelling units with split levels and without an intervening door between the adjacent levels, a smoke alarm installed on the upper level shall suffice for the adjacent lower level provided that the lower level is less than one full story below the upper level.

Thanks. The reason I asked is because I recently finished a major renovation and just realized that there is no detector on the parlor floor. After I posted this earlier today, my architect actually confirmed for me that they are only required on floors with bedrooms. Seems strange to me, though, given that it is universally recommended to install them on every floor of the house. I will now install my own battery-operated one anyway, but the downside is that it will not be hardwired and interconnected like the others (which are set up to all go off if any of them go off).

I don’t know what the code is, but given how incredibly cheap smoke detectors are relative to the benefit they provide, I would certainly want one on every floor. If a fire broke out on the first floor while you were sleeping on the third floor, you would want to know about it as soon as possible giving you more time to get out–especially since you would have to come down the stairs through the smoke on the first floor to get to the door.
