NYC Building code and wood stoves?

Can anyone recommend a building code resource for woodstove installation in an NYC 2 family? All of the chimney guys i’ve spoken to only know fireplaces. I’ve found installation requirements for NY state online but i can’t find anything specific to NYC.  thanks for your help, nicole

Nicanada, did you eventually find some resource? I am looking into installing two wood stoves in a new house. Plans have been approved by DOB, but I want to make sure it is done right by the builder. Thanks!

In my experience chimney and wood stove manufacturers ultimately defer to regional building code, which will ultimately be the final word on how and where you can install wood or gas burning stoves/fireplaces. I’m assuming you would need to file a plan to add a wood stove, with an actual architectural plan. In other words you would need an architect or engineer to spell out on drawings where and how you will be installing the chimney and ducting for the wood stove and the placement of the actual fixture.

Technically you’re supposed to file with teh DoB to install a wood burning stove, but you can go to the industry to get the info. First try the wood stove manufacturers.  They’ll have detailed specs on clearance to combustibles and their stock accessories – chimney, floor spacers, etc.  Then go to the suppliers.  I think there’s one in Queens and another in Staten Island.  The companies should know how far above the roof your chimney will need to extend, most likely 3′.
