Is an enclousre for a boiler required for a single family?

We have an old HPD violation stating lack of compliance with “a proper enclosure for the central heating plant, central hoatingplant cellar center”.  Our boiler and water heater sit in the unfinished cellar but are not enclosed in any way.  Would this violation apply for a single family or only a mulit-family/SRO? We’re in the process of converting to a single family.  Also, is the boiler not being enclosed unsafe?

If we assume that your structure is regulated under the 1968 building code, the room requirement for a furnance only applies if you’re in a multi-family (as in three or more famililes).  There are exceptions for higher-pressure units and being next to garages or other high-risk occupancies.  If you need assistance getting your violation cleared, feel free to contact me.

A boiler enclosure is not required for a single-family residence.
