Convert former garage to residential use - is it possible?

Is it possible to convert a former garage (I believe that is what it is – behind a brownstone – or maybe former stables?) to residential use? (install insulation, plumbing etc). Does anyone know of other examples? are there specific fire code issues to be concerned about? Thanks

In general, yes, it’s possible. However, there are a whole slew of conditions that would make it impossible. Your best best would be to speak directly with an architect and go over the specifics. If you have a survey showing lot with the size of the existing house and garage, that would be extremely helpful in this discussion.
