Can I remove a ceiling overhead light per NYC code?
Hi,
We want to remove the sole ceiling overhead light in our living room (and use just floor lamps.) But a friend warned it might be illegal per NYC code – that every room needs a ceiling light. Is that true or can I remove it? Thanks!

The electrical code is that there is to be an overhead light or a switched outlet in the room. Doesn’t really matter though as you aren’t going to be receiving an electrical inspection any time soon, are you? You can cover it with a blank plate (not plaster / sheetrock). When it comes time to move just put back a $10 contractor grade light.

We’ve had several apartments with no overhead lighting so I doubt that is real regulation but I’ll let better informed people speak.
