building code for deck

Hi, Just want to ask if anyone can point to me on where can i find the building code for deck? Basically, I want to know if the deck that I have in the backyard is really considered a deck. The size is 3’6″ x 3’6″ and 29.6 inches high. I read some where that decks higher than 30″ are subject to the building code, so I’m wondering if my architect purposely drew the plan to have the deck at 29.5 inches high. As such, does that mean that my deck is not subject to the stringent code?
