venting bathroom into the shaft
The shaft was intended as passive ventilation, but was probably sealed off for security. Warm air rose through your buiding.and exited through an opening on top. The shaft drew cooler, fresher air in to your building through open windows in your garden. Some skylights could be closed or opened, but they leaked and rusted, and were gummed up with tar. The windows in the shaft could be opened and closed, in cold weather, but they were painted over. If you can’t restore the original passive system, use fans with ducts to the outside. Blowing moist hot air in the shaft without an opening to the outside, won’t help and could hurt.

hi I have bathrooms with windows facing shaft with skylight. I do not think the windows do good job venting the bathrooms and would like to install exaust fans. Is it ok to direct exaust fans into the shaft or I need to put duckwork all the way to the roof of the house?
