Tempered glass vs regular 3/8" glass?

1/4″ laminated safety glass, no special order (tempered has to be heat treated) basically the same as an automotive windshield. Just look at a car after a serious accident, side windows (tempered) gone, windshield (laminated safety) damaged, but still in place. Great security also, if the glass is well secured in the frame a thief is not going to get through without quite a bit of work. It looks just like regular glass, no “plastic” look, once it’s installed you can’t tell (you can only see the glass sandwich from the edge before installation).

I am getting exterior front brownstone doors made, should I get tempered glass instead of 3/8 in thick regular glass?

i have a particular affinity for laminated, but its more expensive.  tempered is safety glass that does not chard which is why many building codes specify it.

laminated glass passes for safety and is cheaper than tempered, not more expensive.

anywhere near a doorway you will need tempered or lami (code).  I prefer to use lami as it can be cut locally pretty much on demand.  tempered is usually special order and I had always thought that they had to send out of the city for it (my glass guy gets it from a place on LI).  I now understand there is a place down near lowes that tempers in house.  Sometimes customers question me when I recommend lami over tempered thinking the lami will look like plastic.  it does not; it is two pieces of glass laminated to a sheet of plastic; I think it is much safer than tempered.  Also, if you put 3/8 lami in, it is going to be very hard for someone to break in; they may be able to hit it with a good hammer and crack it, but all glass people I have spoken to said they will not get through it.
