Stripping a slate fireplace

There are two non working slate fireplaces in the row house I just purchased. Once is in beautiful condition, just needs to be maintained and the other is painted white with several layers of paint. My questions are : What can I put on the non painted fireplace to maintain it? Someone recommended mineral oil..is that correct or is there another type of oil I should use? Second, what’s the best paint stripper to use on the painted fireplace. I’ve done some research and am confused bc I’ve read that the stripper you should use depends on the type of paint that was used. If anyone can recommend a stripper and how I should go about this, I’d appreciate it. Thanks!

So you have one slate fireplace with its original faux marble painted surface decoration intact, and one that is covered in layers of later plain paint, now white latex? AFAIK you don’t need to put anything on the one with the original surface, although I guess you could consult a faux finish painter about whether something like varnish or shellac would be appropriate (I doubt it). Don’t tape it — ours has flaked off in spots where we did this. Re the one that is painted white, you can use stripper appropriate for stone, such as Peelaway 1\. Though this will take forever — you might want to use a different Peelaway on the top most layers. Latex is much easier to remove than paint with lead in it. The bottom most layer is likely to be a red lead based primer that is extremely difficult to remove. Be advised that if you strip a slate fireplace, the original painted surface decoration will be lost and the bare slate may not match. You may have puce, gray, blue gray bits all different.

We have slate fireplaces throughout our house. All have been stripped. We didn’t finish then with anything and they’ve been fine. Scratches are usually easy to remove with a little mineral oil. We (well, the very experienced guy who did the work) used old-fashioned chemical stripper (Zip Strip or an equivalent brand). It’s toxic but it works. You can also use a heat gun and scraper but that’s even more toxic, in my opinion. Btw, Cate is absolutely correct about slate — you never know what color you’re going to get and sometimes the pieces don’t match.
