So my wife and I finally decided we really need to get our stoop redone before the winter kicks in. I’ve seen excellent and amin over and over. Any recommendations and what’s the process for restoring a brownstone stoop and possibly the facade? We want to be there every step of the way but want to make sure were prepped before contractors start breaking things down for us. What do we expect and what should we not? 3 stories, 17′ wide, any price range? Looked at Excellent, Amin, Titan Contracting’s sites but have any of my fellow brownstoners have any advice?

You should start soon if you plan to do the facade. we used Excellent, started mid-May, the scaffolding went up, demo of old facade took about 10 days (jackhammer, dust), then scratchcoat and waiting for curing. We picked the color around the end of June/ early July. July, Aug, and early Sept was the final facade and detailing. Excellent had to redo our stoop a second time due to poor workmanship and the details on the house a few times as well. It felt like it took forever. For the colors, I highly recommend going to see other houses they have done to get a better sense than the small swatch on your building.

One neighbor of mine had to give a sample of the stone that was taken down for the refurbishing & then match that color. Others, since then, haven’t had to do that but did have to get an o.k from Landmarks for ultimate color decision.

You don’t specify current construction of stoop nor what type facade you have but will assume usual ‘brownstone’ finish on both. For stoop that needs resurfacing, they seem to chip off enough old material to create rough surface so new surface of cement coating or stucco can be applied and adhere. If there is any structural problem with stoop that would be addressed as needed also. The coating can be tinted almost any shade/color you prefer. They should have selection to show you. Similar thing for facade…depending on it condition. Lintels and sills can be cracked. When doing work on front of my house – the lintel over entrance door was cracked and needed to replaced. I have brick front house so never had brownstone facade done…only repointed brick and some work on lintels and sills. If interested in name of my mason – it is shahab uddin. He also did my sidewalk and opened back of house for sliding glass door. I have no idea what costs would be…could vary greatly on extent of work you need or want. And prices could come in all over the place

As Arkady said, we’re going through the color match thing now Extremely annoying, long wait for them to choose one of two samples.This isn’t rocket science! Slowing down the whole restoration for weeks. We found we had to replace our rotting cornice, which we did. Turned out nice, but an added expense. Good luck!

Hi Chestnut, would you mind sharing the name of your contractor for the cornice job and how much you ended up spending. Our wood cornice is falling apart and we need to address this but quotes are all over the place.

Can’t recommend Excellent Contracting highly enough. Those guys work hard.
