Skim Coating drywall - is it worth it?

Hello everyone, We have a gut rehab renovation we are closing on in the next two weeks and I am torn on what to do with the walls. Well, we don’t have any, and I guess that is where I am going with this. What do people typically do on a gut rehab to get the brownstone feel, when no walls at all have been left? Is it worth it to skim coat all of the drywall to give the illusion of plaster walls? If so, what should I expect to pay for this and can anyone recommend anyone reasonable? Much appreciated! Sure, you can skim coat over drywall, but to do the whole house it will be pricy, time consuming and dusty. Best to think hard about what kind of paint finish you want as a final result.In many cases a good drywall job with a high quality paint finish will not look all that different. Have a plaster painter make you some samples to show you what the final surface will look like before you spend all that money skim coating.

Spackel and sand twice I believe, prime, paint. Unless you like reflecting cheap looking walls – it’s worth it of course. Finish is everything. But to do it right will add to your bill.

Sure! We’ve had this done. I’m a little vague on the details. I think you just need one thin coat of plaster/joint compound and that’s it. Any guy who can do drywall can do it. I could be wrong but I don’t think you need a layer of PlasterWeld followed by fiberglass mesh, as you do with traditional plaster to keep it from cracking. Anyone know about that?
