Seeking someone to revive our front entry

Exactly, it would make the vestibule so much more functional, which is probably why they were double doors originally. not to mention that i find it more aesthetically appealing (no need to argue, personal taste). does anyone have a reasonable mason to recommend to redo my cracked steps?

I replaced a door similar to yours that had been framed in like yours with sime nicely done fluted pilasters like that. I also didn’t want the double doors. In the end they cost more and are a pain in the neck to deal with compared to a single door. So, I got one historic door and replaced what I had. You can find them at salvage yards, etc but I bought I nicely stripped historic “double tombstone” glass door from the place linked below in Maine. I understand that the single door is yours. I was just suggesting an alternative that would be an original historic door, cost much less to implement and probably (in my opinion) be more convenient than what I see as rather annoying, narrow double doors. If you are in a landmarked area, the single replacement would be acceptable.

So, question, the original poster has to locate appropriate salvage doors first, before a carpenter can install the doors, or the carpenter has to reproduce the doors, right? I guess it would not be cost efficient to have the carpenter locate appropriate salvage doors? . We have been looking for ages for old doors for our house with no luck. Can’t even find something in the ballpark of the right size, never mind the style. (I did, however, find a single interior entry door that would fit on the garden floor — but not the outside double parlor doors.) . Any suggestions?

Dave – Great suggestion (and link) – I had no idea that landmarks might approve of replacing a modern single door with a similar sized historic door in a historic district. I had always assumed that my neighbors had no option but to revert back to original style double doors, which is cost prohibitive for most.

The double vs single front door is intriguing. What benefit are the single door owners finding vs double? I think it very much depends on the vestibule size and double doors are far better for small spaces. For instance, We would like to replace our single because it makes the vestibule non-functional. To get in or out the door you have to swing open a 34-inch door all the way, as you can’t squeeze by the door otherwise–the vestible is probably 40 inches deep and maybe 60-some wide. And you can’t close it behind you comfortably without opening the vestibule door first, thus allowing wind/cold air to blow it. Also, there’s no point in hanging coat hooks or similar on the wall behind the door swing as you have to close the door all teh way first. I can understand if your vestibule were 8 feet wide by 6 or 8 feet deep, but for our place a pair of say 24 or 26 inch doors would make entering comfortable, you could use the vestibule space again and it lets in more light to boot.
