Rented a dumpster lately?
We have invited our neighbors beforehand to each put in only ONE item. Then covered the dumpster with a tarp secured with rope at night. We have also used Greg’s Express to haul stuff out. The expense is roughly the same, with the difference being that Greg’s Express and other clear-out haulers come with manpower to help.

Hi–we need a small dumpster for yard waste and concrete I’ve pried up…last time I rented one, it was a pretty sketchy experience…anybody have any good recent recommendations for companies that don’t seem, um, menacing? Also, what was your experience on cost, and do I really need a permit to put it on the street? Thanks!

If you can avoid it, I would avoid renting the dumpster because everyone in the neighborhood will use it at night time. I would use a waste hauling person from craigslist. I can’t remember who I’ve used, but there are lots of trash haulers. Make sure you get quotes from a couple of them to make sure you’re getting a reasonable price. Also, you’ll get a better price if you bag everything so it’s easier for them to pick it up and carry it to their truck. Also, I think the city picks up some yard waste on “big trash” days if you properly bundle it, so you probably don’t even need a dumpster for that.

Homeowners have different options than contractors. If you call 311 you can get the trash removal guidelines for your address. Other than that, yes DOT permits are required with street containers but they usually come with the container cost. If you hire someone with a truck, they should have all the proper licenses. There are heavy fines associated with non-legal debris removal. I believe there are companies who do this work located in the Brownstoner directory.
