Plaster Ceiling

I want to redo the crumbling plaster ceiling in my basement with a new one – is it worthwhile to keep the old wooden slats nailed to the beams or better to start from scratch?

I’m always in favor of saving original plaster, but if it’s an unfinished basement, what’s the point? Haven’t seen how bad it is, but you can always laminate and save yourself the demo trouble.

I would think the labor would be cheaper starting from scratch – It’s may be difficult breaking all the keys without trashing the lathe.   I disagree with bobjohn – I think putting drywall in a basement is nuts.

strip everything to the beams and put drywall. It does not take much effort to stip the old ceiling. But you will be able to level the new ceiling, you will save couple of inches of space and you will have oportunity to install highly coveted recessed lights :). Besides, there is always a chance to find jackpot between beams.
