New HVAC & Heating System in gut reno - Advise needed
Hello all, We just closed on a 16.8 x 45, 4 story, 3 family brownstone which is basically a shell. There are no pre existing walls, so everything is open. We need heat and central air. I love the idea of having cast iron radiators but i am concerned with them taking up too much space, since the house is so narrow. What would you all suggest we use for heat and AC?

We are doing renovation now and decided to stick with the cast iron hot water system and running separate a/c. The radiators take up a little space however since you said you are doing a gut reno and can move them anywhere you can place them in areas that don’t bother you. Also there are smaller lower profile radiators that you can find for smaller rooms that also will keep out of your way. I think the radiators help add that period touch to the building that most of us like.

Be careful with radiant. It is extremely expensive when done right. In your case radiant might produce too much heat when working properly, more than house will lose, and overheating will be significant. You can check Runtal or baxi radiators if modern style is considered, or Sunrad cast iron radiators recessed or semi recessed configuration for space savings. For high end Jaga is the best and most compact (Briza or Canal). There are many more options. You must hire heating contractor. Avoid plumbers for this application.

I have hot water heat with cast iron radiators and separate central ac and agree that it is the most comfortable. I did relocate a few radiators for better furniture layout and recessed 2 into the wall. Just be sure if you recess you are using cast iron and not steel fin.

But w a gut radiant floor heat and central air is also an option. I’d steer clear of baseboards, electric, and forced air heat because I think they have a lot of downsides (ugliness, cost, and mold).

Personally I love radiators, think they give off the best heat. The location isn’t necessarily inconvenient. Most of ours are under windows, where we wouldn’t put furniture anyway. Your architect or installer might have more specific info about exactly where they should be located.
