DOB Structural Inspections Quote

Appropriate range of fees for Structural Special Inspections required by DOB? Just received a quote for 18,000 to inspect gut renovation of townhouse (new stairs, bulkhead, roof, rear facade, floors). This is in addition to not inclusive of separate Structural Engineers quote (which is about the same) for drawings/inspections. Any guidance would be appreciated.

$18K for Structural design and another $18K for inspections?! I generally refrain from commenting on other professionals’ costs, but unless there are extremely unique situations here, that seems way out of line. We’ve had engineers design the structure for brand new houses for less than half that and then a few thousand for the controlled inspections. It may be too late for the design engineer, but I would say to call around for another inspector.
