Building a backyard fence & landmarks
Has anyone here built a backyard fence in a landmarked property? We have a partial wooden fence now, that’s old and rotting. We will replace it with a slightly different wooden fence where it exists, and add where it is missing entirely. We are going to match exactly what our back neighbor has already done ( a wooden fence). I understand LPC has jurisdiction.. I am speaking with a contractor who thinks we should just go ahead and do without LPC approval, is this a very bad idea? If anyone has gotten LPC approval for this, and advice, and is this something we can do on our own or do we need to hire an architect? Many thanks.

If thats the case, you should consult with an LPC staff. Your contractor should be able to handle this. Shouldnt cause any major issues, you will be fine. LPC will approve your project, without any trouble. Need help, feel free to shoot me an email or call. Landmark is mostly concerned about the front façade of your building, including the front lawn, stoop, and fence. If the back or sides of your building can be seen from the street, the LPC also has jurisdiction here. Can your backyard fence be seen from the street? As far as needing an architect, you probably won’t unless landmarks requests to see plans of this proposed fence. Your contractor can contact LPC, and work with them to get approval. I’ve recently completed a facade restoration, fence work, and sidewalk restoration at a landmarked property with no issues. As long as you let them know, they won’t give much trouble.
