Any Outcomes from the NHS Home Maintenance Training Course?

I know some brownstoners have taken advantage of the Home Maintenance Training Course provided by Neighborhood Housing Services. Do you have any examples of your work, minor or major, that you’ve accomplished as a result of the course?

I took both the Home Maintenance and the the Advanced Home Maintenance Training courses and got so much out of them. I was already ‘handy’ but this was my first home and we were taking on a huge renovation ourselves. The best thing I got out of the course: confidence that I was perfectly capable of doing a lot of stuff myself and not being afraid to ask people for advice when needed. I highly recommend it, even if you are planning on working with contractors for everything – you will gain an understanding of what is involved in most repairs. The course teaches you basic plumbing – like how to take out and install a new toilet (easy), tiling (I think I am actually now a pretty good tiler) and basic construction skills, including framing, sheetrocking, taping/plastering, etc. You gain a very comprehensive understanding of the structure of your home, including plumbing and electrical. The instructor provides you with a good checklist for maintaining your home each season. Bonus: the instructor (a contractor himself) was awesome and patient with all skill levels; and the fellow students made it really fun and something I looked forward to each week. This is a very affordable course made possible by a truly amazing organization – every homeowner would benefit from their classes.
