Any creative ideas for my long and narrow coal shute
So many cool ideas I had to piggy back one more – the gutter idea except wood gutters, 2 or 3 deep as space allows would be cool? Sealed with Thompsons or something should keep em sound for a long time. At least till Chuck inflates to 4 bucks 🙂 Matt R www.nyc-hs.com

My brownstone has a 3′ wide by 17′ long by 7′ high coal shute that extends from the front wall of my cellar to basically the sidewalk out front. It has brick sides and at the end of it is the actual shute where coal was dropped down. It’s dirty but with a little power washing the brick should look nice. But what can I do with a space that narrow? THe first idea is a wine cellar but being so narrow, if I line one wall with racks, I’ll only have 18-20″ to pass by. I can put a single wine rack at the far end, but that doesn’t seem to take advantage of the depth. What would you do if you had such a cool space?

What would you do if you had such a cool space? What about mushroom farming? I have seen filing cabinet systems that operate in deep narrow spaces. The key is the track system that allows the cabinets to slide in and out of the space. What about a looped ceiling track like you see in meat processing plants or dry cleaners? Not sure what you could hang from the hooks in that narrow space though… pickled pythons maybe.

go with wine cellar – but a slimline one. line the walls with 4″ deep ledges, shaped slightly like a gutter to hold bottle securely… then you can lie bottles flush against the wall, nose to tail along the shelves. it’s less efficient than the regular wineracks, but with 15′ long shelving you could line one wall with a ladder of twelve (spaced 6″ apart up the wall) you could get a dozen cases of wine in there easily.

deano, OP here. I like your idea — and I think I can make it out of 1/2 round galvanized gutter that I fasten directly to the brick. End to end I can easily put a case in each gutter. And like you said, I can probably fit 10-12 lengths of gutter on the wall. Ideas on the far end? Maybe a marble shelf or cabinet to hold stuff that wine people use? And what might that be? As you can tell I am not a wine snob. Do you think I should put a (glass) door on the opening and provide some sort of climate control? daryl

You most likely need some climate control or insulation if the hatch opens to the outside. My coal hatch isn’t the same as yours but definitely gets huge temperature & humidity fluctuation.

arkady, No opening to the outside so temperature and humidity swings might not be great. But to do it right I think you are right that I’ll need to close it off (with a door) and install some climate control. Any suggestions? Given my current taste in wines, I was planning on having the lowest section of gutter hold my two-buck chuck. Then three-buck on the next level and all the way to 12-buck chuck at the very top (to impress my friends). 🙂 daryl

Galvanized guttering would be cool, although rails (like a really long twin-railed towel rack) might be even better, less likely to collect debris or any weeping moisture? maybe a bunch of Ikea stainless kitchen/towel rails? whatever it is, make sure it can hold the weight of a bunch of full bottles… cant imagine why it would need climate controls of any kind — a masonry tunnel buried in the earth it’s going to be pretty close to natural “cave conditions” as is. humans have been storing wine in spaces just like that for centuries without the help of any fancy-pants subzero appliances… well, except maybe a snug-fitting door — if your cellar is anything like mine, you will need to isolate the cave from the main cellar, which my steam boiler keeps really warm & dry all winter long.

…and i wouldnt put anything else in there – it will be dusty, fusty and cobwebby in there, the way the good lord intended a wine cellar to be. not a place to be opening bottles and swirling your fine madeira up against the light, oh no.
