Question for Master Plumber - boiler is not turning on

Our gas boiler is not turning on right now.  We can hear it firing up over and over but the radiators are not turning on and its freezing in here. Any suggestions?

Bear in mind that I’m a woman and I frequently describe household problems with words like “the thing-y that (fill in the blank).”   We ended up calling a boiler repair service because the plumber was backed up and the issue was not the termocouple but when our boiler was installed, there is apparantly a choice between having the pilot light lit 24 hours, like on a stove, or having it lit only when the boiler goes on and we had the latter.  That “thing-y” was broken and had to be replaced so we did so using the one that keeps the pilot light on continuously.  Have no idea what it is called but we are all toasty and warm today. Btw – the boiler guys were wonderful and we would certainly use them again in the future – they were prompt, very nice and waived the service fee.  NY City Boilers – 718-373-3030. And to pig-three – we will be switching plumbers and it will be to Master Plumber. Thanks all.

It is steam and we hear the sound of the flame ignite but over and over again – probably every 10 – 15 seconds.  We’ve since turned it off so I don’t know if the pilot light is on or not at this point.  Have finally gotten hold of or plumber and he is supposedly on his way.  We’ll see.

What exactly do you hear and for how long?  You also need to specify steam or hot water.  I am no expert but since you sound desperate here are two thoughts.  If your water level is low the boiler will start up but soon create enough steam that the level drops and the low water cutoff stops the boiler.  As the steam condenses and returns it will start up again.  Each time you will hear the flame ignite and the whoomp when it burns out.  A completely different sound is a unit with a fan.  You will hear the fan start and then cut off after a minute but there is no flame sound.  In that case you need a new thermocouple.

hot water or steam…does the burner  light, or just attempt to light over and over?…if the latter, replace the thermocouple
