Most multi-family heating systems are activated by a drop in outdoor temperature via something like this:  http://www.heat-timer.com/En/ProductDetail.aspx?ID=5 or even better, this: http://tekmarcontrols.com/resetsavings.html If your boiler is running for the first time this season, it’s a great idea to take a few minutes checking it out.
Watch for escaping steam or smoke, water drips or signs of slow leaks, wires that have become frayed, rust that has formed, rising pressure gauge readings, steady blue gas flames, proper water level on steam boilers, etc. Smell around for gas or burning odors and have multiple carbon monoxide detectors in the living space. Listen for pipe banging (water hammer), excessive vent hissing, grinding sounds from pumps. Safe heating, all.

Heat Timer was a great product for its time, but there are much better boiler controls on the market today. A Tekmar unit costs less and simply does more. If you’d like to talk about it, give my office a call some time or I can come by to have a look. I’m in The Village every day

The heat time is quite old.  The boiler about 10 years.  Boiler works well but the heat timer doesn’t work at all. When switch on you hear the mechanic is running though.  We were told by a few plumbers it needs to be replaced.  Yes, it’s a steam heating system.

I’m sure I’d have many suggestions if you can tell me the problems you’re having. First of all, how old are the Heat Timer and boiler and have they been working well up until now? Is this a steam heating system?

Our building has a problem with the heat timer.  It’s a 4 story walk up with 5 apts and 2 commercial space in NY.  Any suggestions?
