Where Can I Find Salvaged or Repro Stoop Railing?
http://cdn.brownstoner.com/4f40ef64ba37a-.jpg
My partner and I are rehabbing a brownstone shell in Harlem. After nearly a year, we’re almost done. We’re trying to put the façade back to something close to original. What you see in the attached picture is all we started with for stoop ironwork. We found matching balusters at Demolition Depot here in Harlem, but we’re having problems finding railing. Does anyone know where we might find stoop railing? Our railings are 8 to 8 1/2″ wide (depending on which part you measure), and either salvaged or reproduction would work. I’ve heard of salvage yards in Brooklyn that are similar to Demolition Depot, but I’m not sure where they are – can anyone tell me the names of the Brooklyn salvage yards? If anyone has newel posts – we might be interested in that as well…

Great job going for restoration! Star Metal in Brooklyn made molds created from one of each part that I needed and casted what I needed. You have most of the parts that you need to make molds. Try borrowing a newel from someone on your block to create a mold from. You return it installed, repaired, stripped to the metal and repainted.

You’re lucky. This is one of the easier baluster designs to reproduce. Have you looked into getting them made in wood? It could be much less expensive than having them done in metal. With a good coat of paint (try Fine Paints of Europe — their exterior gloss is like enamel) nobody would know the difference. Unfortunately I don’t have a carpenter to refer you to but someone who specialises in millwork would be appropriate.

Larry at Bay Ridge Iron Works 305 Nevins Street (718) 852-0222\. He is old school, if you don’t have a decent budget or are expecting a fancy showroom this won’t work for you. You are probably going to have to bring him a photo to his shop, along with your measurements. If he doesn’t have it he can probably find it for you, and he is the right guy to put the whole thing together. His work is impeccable.

Thanks everyone! We knew about Architectural Iron – problem with them is a 4 month lead time and their closest railing isn’t quite the same profile as what have. We’ll start with the salvage yard and then contact James Garvey if we strike out with salvage.

Try James Gavrvey. He’s a blacksmith who I worked with in the 80s. He did some work like this, but I’m not sure he still does. What he can do for sure is build you an amazing alternative. His work is spectacular. http://jamesgarvey.net/
