This can be done with any 3D modeling/rendering program. If you build the masses accurately and orient them properly, you are able to set parameters for date, time and location (exact long./lat. coords. can be downloaded from your smartphone) and render away.

I’d like to enlarge my house, but I also don’t want to block the sunlight from my neighbor. Does anyone know if there is such a thing, or who is a qualified as an engineer/architect to calculate the amount of sunlight being blocked, and during which periods in the year?

Not sure if there’s such a thing, but if you can’t find one, try asking a photographer. Specifically an architectural photographer who doesn’t use artificial lighting.

This is a quintessential Brownstoner post, I love it. No malice intended, just amazing. Apologies for the zero value added in this response.

Any architect should be able to do that for you.

I agree with Jock. This is something we try to do in all our projects. Passive solar design can go a long way. We can calculate the sun angle when it’s low in winter and you want it coming in, and when it’s high in summer and you want to keep it out, and then design shade structures on the exterior to allow that sun in only when you want it. This helps with heating and cooling costs, as well as maximizing the use of natural daylighting to light your house. Jim Hill, RA, LEED AP Urban Pioneering Architecture
