corner cabinet research?

I’m looking for a circa 1909 dining room corner built-in cabinet that was removed from my house. Here’s a picture of one from a neighbor’s house. Can anyone point me to a picture of one of these that has been restored or recreated? Is it supposed to have a glass door? Is the bottom part a door with shelves inside? Has anyone had a new built-in corner cabinet installed? Or does anyone know of a scan of a catalog that has these? I know on archive.org there are many scans of millwork and mantel catalogs from the turn of the century. I’m having trouble finding one that has built-ins or ornamental mantels like pier mirrors and glass doored cabinets. Also, I find that most online resources for this type of thing separate stylistically into “Victorian” or “Craftsman” while these houses, typical in Brooklyn, are really neither. Would you put in a craftsman mantel or cabinet in a 1909 Brooklyn row house? What would you call this style? Transitional?

I can’t see the detail in the photo too well, but it certainly looks like an original corner cabinet in a 1909 Neo-Colonial Brooklyn Edwardian house. (You are right, this is not Victorian — but nor is it Craftsman. It’s transitional between the two.) I have no doubt yours originally looked just like your neighbors, with glass on the top, and the inset flush door below. (Shelves behind it? Maybe, who knows.) AFAIK you have three choices for restoration: *Procure and install an identical one from one of your neighbors’ houses. *Get a salvage corner cabinet more or less similar in size and from the same era, even though the style won’t be identical. (Note they are not common. Corner cabinets became a rage in the 1930s, but those are the wrong era.) *Have one custom made to match the one in the photo exactly. This is the most expensive option.

“pictures of a house like this that has craftsman-style cabinets? The large pier mirrors much like mantels can be reinstalled. I have installed a few of them over the years. It’s nice when you can find them with the original mirrors that show patina of age.

The chances that you will find exactly the style, size and condition in an antique is slim. Many of these corner cabinets were built in place, some had no backing at all. Often when they are removed, they are reduced to a handful of pieces and are no longer a solid cabinet.

Another question: I think my house originally had large console mirrors in the living room instead of mantels. These are gone. I’ve seen plenty of salvaged mantels at the usual places, and also seen large console mirrors in houses, with columns and woodwork, etc, but I’ve never seen a salvaged mirror of this type for sale. Is it possible to remove these and reinstall them without destroying them? Or is this again something that would have to be made from scratch, rather than bought as a salvage item?

Bob, do you have any pictures of a house like this that has craftsman-style cabinets? My dining room is very sparsely finished, so a variety of styles would probably work. I also need to find these corner rosettes. It seems like most restoration places have similar ones, but not exactly the same. Can something like that be copied form an existing rosette?

You can google image “antique corner cabinet” and see a lot of variety. I don’t see these units often and when I do they are in rough shape. They were often very basic in design.
