Why Is Our Freezer Not Getting Cold Enough?

We’ve got this 2005-era JennAir 22 cubic foot side-by-side fridge that’s never given us any problems. Arrived back on Sunday night though to find that the freezer portion, while not dead, was not getting quite cold enough. There don’t appear to be any temp dials in the freezer. Other ideas for what the problem is or how to fix it?

had the same problem a couple times.  vacuumed it and within about 48 hours it was back to normal.  surprising how long it took, actually.  don’t know why i can’t just remember to vacuum the think every few months…

On days of high demand sucha s we had during the heat wave, Con Edison cuts back on the voltage. The best way to relate this to how it affects an air conditioner is to think of voltage as electromotive force.

Electromotive force can be thought of as that “force”  which tends to cause current (actual electrons and ions) to flow.

Now, those little electrons are the “energy” which causes your compressor to run at rated capacity. If the compressor isn’t getting enough juice then it can’t compress the refrigerant and complete the reverse Rankine cycle.

Think of it as your car isn’t getting enough gas or that same feeling as when you haven’t eaten anything all day and just have no energy but yet you still plod along at half speed. Hope this helps…

It could also be the fan – I had to replace the fan in mine – a $15 part & you can do it your self.

Vacuum thoroughly the grills, vents and area around the evaporator coil if you can reach it. Sometimes dust and lint build up to the point where air flow is restricted and the compressor starts working much less efficiently.

Perhaps the freezer went on strike because of the extreme conditions > 100 degrees recently. My ice maker quit making ice on Friday & Saturday, but resumed when the temp came back down. Check your manual’s troubleshooting section (you might find it by model # online). Possibly it got stuck in defrost mode.
