Venting Dryer through Basement Hatch vs. Ventless Dryer in Basement

Our building is currently considering installing a washer and dryer in our brownstone basement. One option is to vent the dryer out of the hatch in front of our building (see example image). If you have experience with this set-up, can you comment on the cost and your experience with it? Are there issues with warm/hot air blowing out of the vent onto the sidewalk or common areas? Secondly, do others have experiences with a ventless dryer (to be shared by 7 apartments) located in the basement? How has it been both functionally and moisture-wise? Our basement has had humidity issues in the past. Thanks so much!

I agree with all the comments about ventless being inferior to vented. Vented is really the way to go if it’s at all possible and in your case it is. Also for 7 units, I would install 2 dryers per washer, if you can. It will make it so much more accessible to so many more people that way. It’s always the drying cycle that bogs down the process. It’s not such a big deal if’s your own washer and dryer, but if you are sharing, it can make it impossible for the next person to have access when it fits in their schedule. www.janeinteriorsnyc.com

i have one that vents into a small garden area and never had a problem. Get a vented dryer if at all possible. ventless for 7 units will be hell as they take forever to dry.

I vent mine out a similar hatch in the back of the house & haven’t had any problems in 30 years.

I cant speak to the vent/sidewalk issue, but ventless dryers stink, better to get a real one with a real vent.
