rental range hood

We are about to move into a new construction condo rental. The one issue, the kitchen lacks a hood over the stove. There is nothing over the stove and the back splash only covers part of the wall and then its drywall. the kitchen is, however open to the living room and while there is central air, the windows in the livingroom open. Is there any building code that I can point to to say the ventilation is inadequate and they should at least install a recirculating hood? from my research mounting a hood, like the ones they sell in Ikea is simple, however all the hoods i can find require electrical work as they need a direct connection and can’t be plugged into a regular outlet. just wondering what my options are. thanks

There’s nothing ‘tricky’ about plugging in a hood! Add a three-wire cable and  a plug for chrissakes. Anyone vaguely handy can do it. Making it look asthetic…now that’s tricky.

It would be a recirculating hood with a carbon filter, more to trap grease particles than for smell. The only tricky part of the instal would be the electrical, the wall mounting is simple, the units usually come with the stencil for where to drill. I figured it passed inspections because of the location to the windows. I think my best argument is that the landloard should want to protect their walls and counters from the longterm effect of grease particulates going everywhere, and I would pay. Thanks.

If the kitchen is open to the livingroom and there are operable windows in the livingroom, and the stove is no more than a certain distance from those operable windows (25 feet I think?) then the set up is legal and LL is obligated to do nothing. Only if the kitchen were in a windowless room is a fan vent required.

Are you talking about a real hood with an exterior vent or a recirculatng vent like the type that are part of a microwave that you mount above the stove??  It’s highly unlikely that the landlord will allow the former (and t’ll be expensive running ductwork and out the building) but yes, the latter type units are typically plugged into a concealed outlet in the cabinetry above.  In either case, electrical work will be needed.

i’m willing to pay to put a hood in, but they might balk if electrical work is needed. if i can point to some regs that favor a hood or ventilation it would make them more likely to allow me to install one

Really!…so you saw this apartment, decided to sign a lease, and after the fact want the landlord to make some change at no cost to you?  Good luck with that…it’s not like it was a concealed condition. Setting aside the propriety of the question, I don’t believe there’s any requirement for a full height backsplash in the code or MDL…they’re common.  If the kitchen can legally use the fresh air from the living room, there’s no need for any mechanical ventilation.  Even if the kitchen needs to be mechanically ventilated, that doesn’t necessarily mean a hood.  A small (6″x6″ or so) fresh air vent anywhere in the kitchen would likely meet the legal requirements.
