Range on an Island?

Hi everyone.  Dreaming about moving our range stove to the island.  Other than running the gas line, are there any issues i need to be concerned about?  Does NYC code require a vent to the outside?  Does code require a vent at all?  Have lots of windows nearby so as long as its not required, would like to avoid a vent altogether. I have a cooktop with separate popup downdraft on an island and for sure there is some bad advice on this thread.  You want a separate downdraft and you want it to popup – the higher the better or it won’t capture anything and it will pull your flame (and heat) away from the pan.  A downdraft is never as good as a hood.  It can be adequate if you accept the trade offs.  For me I wanted no obstruction in the middle of the room and I don’t grill inside, don’t wok  and rarely fry.  Also, it was not for “looks” that I put it on an island, it was for work flow – which is working very well and therefore worth the venting compromise.  For good discussions on the topic and good advice go to the Appliance forum at gardenweb dot com.

Yes, I’m looking at downdraft cooktops (either built into the unit or the add-on type) and wish I could get more info from anyone who has one! Are they difficult to install? What are the primary considerations? Is there a particular brand that’s better than others? Personally I would want to be able to vent my cooking so as not to stink/smoke up the upper floors.

We recently moved a range to an island for a client and it looks great.  The clients are avid cooks, and so we spec’d a downdraft hood which is reported to be performing sufficiently well.

Also, if the oven is electric (most are) you need 220 volts at the island, not just 110

There are also slide-in ranges that have a pop-up hood.  I guess if they have a strong enough fan they might be useful.  That said, if you have one of those non-venting vents (like the type underneath a microwave) they don’t actually vent and are of limited usefullness.  Only a full hood that actually vents outside is truly useful.

 There is no code to move a range to an island. If your range is not a professional one you can get away without  a hood.  If you are not buying a new range- can you buy an island trim for your existing range? I have a home with a range island and I see no issue with regard to smoke but then I don’t grill on it either.  Aside from grilling, I wouldn’t worry about it.  As far as code, I believe but am not sure, that if there’s a window, there needn’t be a hood/vent

for me loosing the hood would be a strong argument to not move the range.
