New Washer and dryer?
Hi all, My dryer just stopped working — it made a clicking sound, would not “tumble” and then stopped. I waited a few hours, tried it again, and this time it worked. A day later it stopped again. My question is whether or not it is worth repairing. We bought our house about 5 years ago, and my guess is that the washer and dryer were at least 5 years old (if not older) at that time. Is it even worth bothering to have someone try and repair it? Assuming it is not worth it, can anyone recommend a new washer and dryer? Space is not a concern. Thanks!

If it is your first repair, it may be worth finding out if it can be fixed. The problem is, unless you know someone like a cheap handyman who has some skills is this area, a service call to a repair company will cost a bunch just for the visit, even if the repair itself is a $10 fix. Years ago, we paid almost $200 for a fix to a washer that was a small plastic part, that was necessary for the agitator to work. When it broke the next time, rather than pay the repair bill, we elected to get a new one (front loading this time, without an agitator.) So, likely worth a try once anyway, to see how much it costs to fix – its a crapshoot, though. If it turns out to be a cheap repair after the initial service charge just to come out, easy decision that time. If it turns out you get an estimate for an expensive repair, it is harder to make the decision when you’ve already got the sunk cost of the service charge – thinking about that can make you spend more than it is worth to fix it.

We had a similar issue with a Bosch dryer that’s about 8 years old. Turns out the sensor telling the machine that the dryer door was shut had broken. It was a quick and inexpensive repair. I’d get it checked out before you toss the whole thing.

I agree it’s better in the big picture to repair stuff rather than creating junk. It may be something a simple as a belt needs replacing which might be diy if you buy the part, or an inexpensive job for a repair guy. Personally I’d avoid hundreds of bucks on a dryer that’s over 10 years old when you could spend a couple hundred more and get a new one.

IMO it’s worth getting an estimate on a repair. Our dryer is about 15 years old and is working fine, with a couple of minor repairs over the years. OTOH our washing machine is working fine after 38 years, again with some minor repairs. I don’t see much point in filling junk yards with repairable appliances.
