do you love your gas range?

our new tenants want a new stove, and frankly, so do we. I’m looking at consumer reports  but not getting excited yet. do you have a range you just love? a brooklyn source? one thing I might need to get over: all new stoves seem to have a digital panel for the oven. I don’t love this, but the ones without it cost about $5,000 or more. any advice? anyone have experience good or bad with ikea? many thanks

You didn’t say whether you have gas or electric, what width you’re working with and type of kitchen set up, all of which would sway my recommendations. My sister has the gas Fisher and Paykel OR36SDBGXI. She loves coking with it and I find it very handsome. I’ts wide but not chunky at all. I’ve only got electric and, although I have yet to replace my (crappy) kitchen, I’ve found that the looks and perfomance I want would seem to be best provided by separate cooktop and oven. To see appliances in person, I’d recommend heading to the Flatiron District and going to the PC Richard on 23rd St. (they have more items for smaller kitchens than the other PC Richards I’ve been to), Gringer(sp?) on 18th, and maybe the Home Depot on 23rd, too.

For appliance retailers, I strongly recommend J&R on 7th Ave in Park Slope. This is an independently owned small business where you give them a model/brand number and the chainstore price and they’ll match it and deliver the thing. Ralph, Mario or Bill will help you.

My wife and I bought a Wolf 30″ gas range and we love it. The red knobs are sexy, the controll of flame is amazing and it is a true family workhorse. We’ve had it four years now and I have no regrets. Besides, Wolf is the only company that offers a two year warranty, including all parts and labor.

I’ve have 2 Magic Chefs “stainless steel” models over almost 20 years. Great. No trouble, look good and cost < 900\. PCR has them I think. They are electronic. I suspect nowadays the electronics are pretty bullet-proof (unless you get Viking ;).)
