Can the indoor unit of a mini-split air conditioning system be mounted on the wall vertically? I have only seen them mounted horizontally?

No. You can’t hang it from the ceiling, it drains by gravity. Find another location for it. We have installed mini-splits in all sorts of houses in all sorts of rooms. The only limit is your own personal aesthetic. And while there is nothing wrong with hating the look (many people do), it’s up to you to either find a location that works or look at a different type of system which of course means purchase of new equipment. By the way the indoor unit is the cheaper part of the system. You could potentially keep the condenser and just buy an indoor unit that works for you.

get a concealed ductless split in a location that fits, and use a small duct in the shape you like.

Well no, not as is. With a bit of work you could rework it a bit. People used to build their own split systems for years by chopping up window ac s. we used to make our own portable units. You would need to rework a new drainpan. I am guesing that the fins and fan would not respond so well. I would try to make something work with a ceiling unit which is under 24 inches. If you cant get it in the ceiling you can build a little soffit or cabinet for it. I am guessing you have a small wall between windows or something.

No. It must be able to drain. Horizontal only although I *think* LG may make a vertical one.
