Big washer, little door
We want to get a washer down into our basement – the door is only 20″, and none of the (top-loading) washers that have the capacity we want are smaller than that. A handiman we use has suggested buying one, taking it apart, and re-assembling it in the basement, but our appliance repair guy says that might not be possible with modern top-loaders. Has anyone done this? Any suggestions on someone who could do this for us? I know there are plenty of companies out there who will happily saw apart your furniture to get it through a tight spot, there must be something similar for appliances… Thanks

First, see if it can be lowered through the hatch in the front. My neighbor did that. Second, I would recommend taking the door frame down and reinstalling door afterwards. That is what I had to do with a 24″ wide door and a 27″ wide washer.

Install a new door, cheaper.

I’m a front loader girl but we had the same issue in our basement, had to buy smaller appliances to fit in. Possible you can do smaller loads and take the big stuff to the laundromat? I just washed a queen size comforter in our smaller front loader today, after baby peed on it. whoops. Maybe if you have your heart set on a certain machine you can get it down the hatch? taking apart a washing machine seems weird but I have no idea how they work.

It would probably be easier to rebuild the door opening that to mess with the washer. Plus I bet you’d void any warranty if you took the thing apart. You only have one door into the basement?
