Recommendations for Mechanical Watch Repairs?
Not house related, but I’m hoping that some people I who like old houses also (like me) like old wrist watches. I have a late ’40s Swiss chronograph that needs repairs. The last place I used for this watch was the Clock Repair People on 7th Avenue in PS, now long gone, Any recomendations, preferably, but not necessarily, in Brooklyn. The watch is fairly good quality but not a high end brand. Nevertheless, I realize that chronograph repairs can be costly.

I had inherited a 55 year old Rolex that wasn’t keeping time well. The Rolex service center in Manhattan fixed it once (for $500) but the problem reoccurred. This time they said it was too old for them to fix and sent me to the American Watch and Clockmakers Institute (or some other horological group — I’ve forgotten which) who referred me to Richard Luts, a horologist in Madison, NJ. He fixed the watch in no time. Not cheap, but incredibly knowledgeable and professional. Based on how much business he was doing and (somewhat remote) location, this is where local watch repair people send their more difficult work to be done. His phone is 973 360-0907, www.rlhservicecenter.com

Find out if the watchmaker is still in business, and ask them if they would repair it for you. I inherited my grandfather’s (non working) IWC watch which the company restored beautifully. It did cost me, though. Good luck, RG

Hey, there used to be a shop on University Place in the Village that I had look at an old watch I have. I have meant to bring it back to him to fix it – he sounded as though he knew what he was talking about. Now mind you, he could be gone as that was over 10 years ago. There is a shop out in East Islip that I had overhaul two 1890’s pocket watches (they were my great grandfather’s) and my grandfather’s 1930’s wrist watch – the place is called the Time Shop. I was always very pleased with them and only stopped going there because i moved away. Steve

I sent my Rolex out to Colorado to a guy a niece of mine recommended. If you’re interested in doing that, re-post the question over on lifeinbkln.com & I’ll give you the info.
