SAMUEL LOVETT WALDO (AMERICAN 1783-1861). PAIR OF PORTRAITS OF MR. AND MRS. CORNELIUS SCHERMERHORN OF NEW YORK CITY, CIRCA 1810-1815. Cornelius Schermerhorn (1756-1826) was a ship master and rising merchant engaged in a line of packets running between New York, Charleston and Savannah, with offices located at 43 Water St. and later 71 South St. in lower Manhattan. He and his wife, Rebecca Roe (1756-1822) lived at 39 Beekman St. from 1794-1814\. Depicted seated, she in white lace cap and collar, he in black waistcoat and ruffled cravat. Each oil on canvas, 33 ½ x 26 ½ inches.
Provenance: Descended to the sitters’ great-grandson, Edgar N. Wrightington (1875-1945) and to his widow, Brookline, Massachusetts; John D. Lewis, The Antiquarian Shop, Sewickley, Pennsylvania, 1969 (incorrectly attributed to Gilbert Stuart); Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland, Ohio, 1989.
