Epilogue: The owners lived with it for 6 years and it really was a painful decision to take it out. But that place in the chimney is the correct place in the kitchen for the stove one actually uses, so given the limited space, they’ve done the right thing. Nobody bought it, so the old iron stove went to Build It Green. Maybe somebody on here can find somebody to buy it and refurbish it for use in a period-style Brooklyn kitchen. I hope so.

I have only seen two of these – both in Bed Sty. I would not get rid of it as everyone that I have met who does not have one wants one. I am going to mention this one to the homeowner on the kitchen reno I am on as that is exactly what would have been in their house. Steve

OP, if a contractor has told you the chimney or the stove cannot be fixed, call Manny La Salle. If anyone can fix it, he can. He can also remove it without damaging the stove or the chimney. He buys these things, as does Olde Good Things. The other interested parties may be your immediate neighbors, who have the same size opening in their kitchens and may regret the loss of their original stoves. Not that I’m encouraging you to get rid of it. It could be a unique part of a magnificent kitchen — and one that makes your house very desirable.

What are its dimensions? And what are the dimensions of the chimney that it fits into?

388 Stuyvesant had the original working wood stove in the kitchen and recently sold for over a million. It was an elegant and luxurious kitchen that also had the original icebox, as well as new and beautiful counters, cupboards, a hanging pot rack, and a top-of-the-line new stove. There was plenty of room for everything. The owner would have a roaring fire going in the old stove every October on the house tour. It was utterly charming.

Oh my goodness. This must be one of the few original built-in ranges left in NYC. Pity you won’t be keeping it.
