we need to repair some/replace most of the windows in our home. we’d like them to be historically faitful (~1900), BUT energy efficient (duh) and inexpensive. there are about 18 in all, though i think a handful are fine as-are. let’s hope those tax credits get renewed for 2014, tho i won’t hold my breath… does anyone have 1) a great brand/installer recommendation? 2) experience going through this, and can take a stab at how long it might take to do this job, and how much it might cost? second Q: can someone suggest a good warm, soft stain for floors? slightly darker than natural, but not too dark, too brown, or too red? and we’d like to finish them so they hold up to use, but not so they are extremely shiny or look encased in plastic (which is how our current rental floors look). i found carlos through brownstoner, which was great. thanks!

I like golden pecan for floors, really shows the grain without being too light.

I highly recommend Trimline windows (check the company site for the current dealer list). We had them installed 3 years ago and are very happy with the look and the performance. They were very well-priced, and they fit our 2010 brick rowhouse extremely well. They do meet the energy rating (but check the formalities – such as inspection, qualified installer, depending on the current rebate program). You should have them installed by an experienced carpenter, who should also take all measurements before you order. Expect to pay 400-700$ per window for installation.

If you have the original windows, nothing is more energy efficient than one of those in proper working order with a storm window on top of it. Plus they look amazing. You will not get the same look from any replacement window, not even the ones that cost $1,000 each. Replacement windows are very expensive. We got a quote for 15 Marvins installed — $30,000\. We ended up using Champion, cost $12,000.
