If that is Brooklyn Borough Hall, it was deteriorating as it was being installed. I don’t know how the Dept of Investigation let that one pass.

I think the messed up tiles at Boro Hall are more a result of a poor choice of quarry combined with truck and car traffic on a surface never intended for that. We have slate sidewalks in front of our house which have never split after more than a century in place.

Bluestone has layers and cracks and is even more vulnerable to deterioration as dorkofwindsor explained. I posted this because I see the plaster coating of neigboring stoops falling apart, specifically the ones where the owners/maintenance pour a bucket of salt with every inch of snow.

tsarina while salt itself has corrosive properties, it is precisely how salt worsens the freeze and thaw action of the hard ground that makes it so destructive. So even if you use “friendly” salt de-icing alternatives, you are placing melted water into the pores of the concrete/ salt / stone, and once inside it freezes and expands (roughly 9% by volume) as it gets colder overnight and can crack the ground from the inside. Technically it is a dilate and rupture cycle that is greater than the substrate tensile strength, but it is usually the cumulative effect of successive freeze-thaw cycles that can eventually cause expansion and cracking, scaling, and crumbling of the ground material. Either way if you are trying to be safe or avoid a lawsuit, there isn’t much choice on a year like this one – all the products on the market that melt ice will significantly worsen the freeze thaw cycle.

I dont think salt is the culprit. The freeze and thaw of ice this winter is murder on the roads and sidewalks.

But how about when you compare it to a) the slip and fall capital of the world inside b) the lawsuit capital of the world in c) one of the icier winters we’ve had in a while. We are talking about more people coming and going through a place that have no job or income….. Salt away!
